CENTENNIAL, Colo. — The Colorado Division of Veterans Affairs will host a ceremony to honor women veterans June 7, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado, 2830 Riverside Parkway, Grand Junction, Colorado.
In 2024, Governor Jared Polis signed House Bill 24-1236, officially recognizing June 12th, annually, as a day of recognition for Colorado’s women veterans. On this date in 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed the Women's Integration Act, authorizing women to serve in the U.S. military in official roles.
21 states and U.S. territories also celebrate this date.
The Adjutant General of Colorado U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Laura Clellan will preside over the ceremony.
“Since the Revolutionary War 250 years ago, women have served and sacrificed for our nation,” Clellan said. “Their achievements in both combat and support roles continues to inspire people to join our Armed Forces today.”
The ceremony will include the unveiling of a new bronze statue at the cemetery. The statue of U.S. Air Force veteran, Capt. Mary Ellen Kuhlman, serves as a monument to the significant contributions of women’s service to this nation and their significant role in the U.S. military.
The ceremony is expected to end around noon. Light refreshments will follow the ceremony. The cemetery asks that attendees to the service bring their own seating. This will also be a “Wear your hat/cover” event. We encourage women veterans in attendance to wear their service hat/cover.
The VMC conveys the appreciation of the people of Colorado to its veterans for answering the call of duty and faithfully and honorably serving the United States of America and the State of Colorado.
More than 8,500 Colorado women serve in all branches of our Armed Forces.
More than 47,000 women veterans live in the State of Colorado.
