CENTENNIAL, Colo. – U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Scott M. Sherman, deputy commanding general – Support and deputy commanding general – National Guard of U.S. Army North (Fifth Army), will retire after more than 30 years of military service in a ceremony May 2 at 3:00 p.m. in the Sparks Auditorium at Joint Force Headquarters, Centennial, Colorado.
Sherman served in the Colorado National Guard as director of joint staff. In this role, he was responsible for leading the CONG’s response to domestic emergencies and for deepening Colorado’s strategic alliances with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Republic of Slovenia through the National Guard State Partnership Program.
He served as the Joint Task Force-Centennial commander during the COVID-19 response, the CONG’s largest and longest activation, which began in 2020. He attained the rank of brigadier general during this time.
“Major General Sherman has been a pivotal leader of both state and federal missions for the National Guard,” said The Adjutant General of Colorado U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Robert Davis. “He coordinated the state's historic response to COVID-19 and led the Colorado National Guard’s response to multiple large-scale wildfires. General Sherman developed a generation of leaders within the Colorado National Guard, where he served for over two decades.”
The official ceremony will include the firing of a ceremonial cannon salute.
Sherman graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1992, was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Field Artillery, and served on Active Duty until he joined the Colorado Army National Guard in 2000.
He also previously served as: chief of staff/command administrative officer, Colorado Army National Guard; commander, 169th Field Artillery Brigade, Buckley Air Force Base, Aurora, Colorado; and, chief of joint staff, Joint Force Headquarters, Centennial, Colorado.
He holds a Master of Business Administration from Colorado State University and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.
His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Senior Parachutist Badge.
Sherman is married to Dr. Valerie Sherman. They reside in Greeley, Colorado, and have two adult children.
