Colorado National Guard celebrates 65 years at Buckley Base

As far back as 1938 when the city of Denver bought and donated land for a planned bombing range east of the city, the property known currently as Buckley Space Force Base, named in honor of Longmont, Colorado, veteran 1st Lt. John Harold Buckley, has left a lasting impact on the citizens of Colorado.

Few people have the honor of closing a chapter in their career by spending a morning flying a fighter jet over the state they serve in, as well as the state they were born in. Following in the footsteps of his father who flew the same aircraft decades prior, U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Jeremiah “Weed” Tucker, director of Air Staff for the Colorado Air National Guard, went out in style after relinquishing command of the 140th Wing in November 2024.

1st Air Force commander visits 140th Wing alert program

The new commander of the Continental U.S. North American Aerospace Defense Command Region and 1st Air Force paid a visit to the 140th Wing, Colorado Air National Guard, Oct. 31, 2024, citing its importance to the homeland defense apparatus.

Airmen from the 140th Security Forces Squadron, Colorado Air National Guard, engage in close-quarters battle, a type of combat that typically occurs in confined spaces, such as buildings, vehicles, or other structures, during annual training at Aviano Air Base, Italy, Sept. 14-27, 2024. The Colorado Air National Guard’s 140th Security Forces Squadron traveled to Aviano Air Base, Italy, for required annual training Sept. 14-27, 2024. The type of training conducted was dictated by a shift in priorities reflecting the changing security environment and the increasing importance of protecting air bases from ground threats. It focused on key areas of integrated defense, including close-quarters battle scenarios, domestic violence response, and active shooter threat management.

Governor Polis and the Colorado Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced today $8.4 million through the Colorado Strategic Wildfire Action Program (COSWAP), which accelerates forest restoration and wildfire risk reduction through targeted projects that protect communities, watersheds and critical infrastructure.
