Colorado National Guard members hold a memorial retreat in honor of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the Global War on Terror, April 15, 2012, at the CONG state headquarters in Centennial, Colo. Today marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Romero, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on April 15, 2002. In addition to being the state’s first combat death since the terrorist attacks in the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001, Romero also has the solemn honor of being the National Guard’s first GWOT casualty. Other Soldiers who are being honored are Sgt. Luis Reyes, who died Nov. 18, 2005 en route to Iraq; Sgt. Jon Stiles, who died Nov. 13, 2008 in Afghanistan; and Chief Warrant Officer 4 David R. Members of the 193rd Military Police Battalion receive a farewell from their family and firends at the Douglas County Events Center Oct. 21, 2014, as they depart for their year-long detainee operations mission in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The members will spend a year away from their families and civilian employers. Many of the unit members work as civilian law enforcement officers and corrections officers in their fulltime jobs, which contributes to their readiness and experience.

Two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crews with aircraft, equipped with aerial water buckets, from the Chief Warrant Officer 5 David R. Carter Army Aviation Support Facility based at Buckley Air Force Base, Aurora, Colorado, depart the Spring Fire helibase, in Fort Garland, Colo., to support fire suppression efforts July 3, 2018. The team arrived and began operations July 2.

The CONG has supported the Spring Fire since July 1, 2018, providing capabilities to include: security personnel for traffic control points and roving patrols; two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crews and aircraft each equipped with aerial water buckets; geological information system operators; as well as, refueling crews with Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical refueling trucks and firefighters with HEMTT firefighting vehicles.

The CONG has been providing an aviation search and rescue standby capability in support of the Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center since July 1. The High-Altitude Army National Guard Aviation Training Site facility in Gypsum, Colorado, is supporting the mission which is rapid response to aviation search and rescue missions, primarily for firefighter safety, in support of multiple wildfire responses throughout Colorado.

On order of the Governor, the standing Joint Task Force - Centennial commands and integrates CONG forces to support civil authorities in assisting Colorado, or supported states, during times of crisis and disaster, to save lives, prevent suffering, and mitigate great property damage.

The Adjutant General of Colorado U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Mike Loh pins a medal on a 5th Battalion 19th Special Forces Group member at a Valor Ceremony, Feb. 10, 2018, following the units recent return.

Local and national leaders will honor Colorado Army National Guard Soldiers from Bravo Company, 5th Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne) Feb. 10, with valor awards they earned while deployed last year in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

The unit returned from a six-month deployment to Afghanistan in October 2017.

The awards approved include seven Purple Heart Medals, 10 Bronze Star Medals with Valor, and eight Army Commendation Medals with Valor. One Silver Star Medal has also been approved, but the member is currently deployed in support of the warfight.

Many of the 59 valor awards submitted are still pending.
