CENTENNIAL, Colo. (6/25/13) – The Colorado Army National Guard will host a departure ceremony for Army Space Support Team 23, 117th Space Battalion, at the Colorado National Guard State Headquarters June 25 at 2 p.m.

ARSST-23 will provide space-based products and support to units serving in the Southwest Asia area of operations.

This deployment will be approximately one year.

Colorado National Guard senior leaders and Colorado state Sen. Owen Hill will attend.

"As Citizen-Soldiers, we're proud to be called to active duty,"  said Maj. Gen. H. Michael Edwards, adjutant general of Colorado. “The Soldiers of ARSST-23 provide unique skills and products to help the warfighters do their job as well-prepared and as safely as possible. They are trained and prepared to conduct their mission. I have complete confidence they will do well and make a positive difference."

An ARSST team consists of six Soldiers capable of providing spaced-based products used in theater operations. Soldiers support the war fighters by monitoring and providing accurate, timely, and actionable terrestrial and space weather data. They also provide satellite imagery; surveillance; reconnaissance; early warning of missile threats; GPS monitoring and accuracy reporting; and monitoring and reporting of counter-improvised explosive device programs – all of which contribute to situational awareness of the battlefield.

The unit completed several weeks of theater specific pre-mobilization training in preparation for this deployment.

The 117th Space Battalion, the only Army National Guard Space Battalion, falls under Army’s 1st Space Brigade for training, readiness and oversight.

For Assignment Editors: Media interested in attending this event must RSVP with 1st Lt. Skye Robinson 720-250-1052 in order to gain access to Colorado National Guard State Headquarters.
