CENTENNIAL, Colo. (8/2/12) – It is with deep sadness the Colorado National Guard announces the loss of one of its own.
Spc. Deanna D. Ballman, a supply specialist with the 220th Military Police Company, was in the process of transferring to the Ohio National Guard at the time of her death.
"It's always a terrible tragedy when we lose a Guard member, and the unknowns in this case make it all the more difficult," said Maj. Gen. H. Michael Edwards, commander of the Colorado National Guard. "Deanna's contribution to the National Guard will be truly missed, and we will do everything we can to support her family during this most difficult time."
Initial media reports indicated Ballman was a member of the Ohio Army National Guard. On June 28, she requested to leave the Colorado Army National Guard, seeking an interstate transfer to the Ohio Army National Guard.
On July 5, Ballman signed a statement of understanding that she had 90 days to transfer into the new unit. On July 10, the Ohio Army National Guard received the transfer request and began processing it, a process that usually takes 30 days.
Until the transfer was officially completed by her swearing into the Ohio Army National Guard, Ballman was still considered a member of the Colorado Amy National Guard.
Her awards include a National Defense Service Medal and an Army Service Ribbon.
The details of Ballman's death are under investigation by the Delaware County Sheriff's Office in Delaware, Ohio. The Colorado National Guard will support the investigation to the fullest extent possible.
