CENTENNIAL, Colo. (1/20/12) – The Colorado General Assembly will host a Colorado Military and Veterans Appreciation Day at the State Capitol Jan. 23.

The Adjutant General of Colorado and Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Maj. Gen. Mike Edwards will speak at a reception at 9 a.m. on a day that marks the 152nd anniversary of the Colorado National Guard.

The National Guard Association of Colorado will sponsor the reception celebrating the occasion.

The legislature will pay tribute to Colorado military members, veterans, prisoners of war, and service members missing in action beginning at 10 a.m.

The Colorado Army National Guard State Honor Guard will render military honors during the General Assembly session.  The Colorado Army National Guard 101st Army Band will play the national anthem.

State representatives will pass several house joint resolutions recognizing the service and sacrifice of veterans, military members, and their families who have called Colorado home.

“It’s a great day when we recognize Coloradoans who have served our country and those who are currently serving,” said Edwards.  “Let it be known—the State of Colorado proudly supports our military members, veterans, and their families.”

More than 420,000 veterans live in Colorado.

Colorado's military installations inject more than $4 billion into the state’s economy.

During the 10 years since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Colorado National Guard Soldiers and Airmen have deployed more than 6,000 times while maintaining state emergency response capabilities and supporting 24/7/365 homeland defense missions.
