CENTENNIAL, Colo. (8/18/11) – The Colorado Army National Guard was called today to assist the Saguache County Sheriff’s Department in the search for a hiker near Challenger Point in Saguache County, Colo.

The 52-year-old man was last known to be hiking down the mountain.

An LUH-72 Lakota helicopter, with two Colorado Army National Guard Soldiers on board, launched at approximately 2 p.m. today from the COARNG’s Army Aviation Support Facility on Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, Colo., to aid in the search.

Rescue efforts are coordinated through the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center, which notifies the Colorado National Guard’s Joint Operations Center in Centennial, Colo. The AFRCC ties in to the Federal Aviation Administration’s alerting system and the U.S. Mission Control Center.
