Air Force Maj. Elena O’Bryan

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (6/30/11) – This Independence Day, the Colorado National Guard will be seen and heard in both the air and on the ground at patriotic events across the state.

“Nearly a decade has passed since the tragic attacks of 9/11,” said Maj. Gen. H. Michael Edwards, the Adjutant General of Colorado. “Though much is said about bringing our troops home, for many of our patriots, the war wages on. This Independence Day, we recognize all those who have served and those who still shoulder the burden of maintaining our nation’s freedoms.”

The 140th Wing of the Colorado Air National Guard continues to guard our skies 24/7/365 from the only centrally-located alert fighter facility in the nation – Buckley Air Force Base, Aurora, Colo.

“Within minutes of the terrorist attacks our Colorado Air National Guard pilots were airborne in F-16 Fighting Falcons,” said Brig. Gen. Trulan A. Eyre, 140th Wing Commander.

During the 10 years since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Colorado National Guard Citizen-Soldiers and Citizen-Airmen have deployed more than 6,000 times while maintaining state emergency response capabilities and supporting homeland defense missions.
