CENTENNIAL, Colo. (6/9/11) – Ambassador Roman Kirn of the Republic of Slovenia and other dignitaries will conduct a linden tree-planting ceremony to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Slovenian independence.
The ceremony is scheduled to take place June 10 at 10 a.m. at Colorado National Guard Joint Force Headquarters plaza in Centennial, Colo.
This tree-planting will be the third such event organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in the U.S.
The Colorado National Guard’s state partnership with the Republic of Slovenia is in its 18th year and was among the first global partnerships of its kind.
The National Guard’s State Partnership Program, which began in 1993, establishes and sustains enduring relationships with partner nations through military-to -military, military-to-civilian, and civilian-to-civilian exchanges.
The linden tree (tilia europaea) is a tree common to Slovene forests and villages. The linden tree (also the lime tree or Tilia in Latin) has been a national symbol of Slovenians and has cultural significance for other Slavic nations.
“The linden tree has historically symbolized the social and political center of the village in Slovenia. Now it will also grace the center of our headquarters symbolizing the lasting friendship between the Republic of Slovenia and Colorado,” said Maj. Gen. H. Michael Edwards, the Adjutant General of Colorado.
The United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests. Slovenia is the third most forested country in Europe after Sweden and Finland.
During the 10 years since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Colorado National Guard Soldiers and Airmen have deployed more than 6,000 times while maintaining state emergency response capabilities and supporting 24/7/365 homeland defense missions.
For Assignment Editors: Media wishing to cover this event should arrive at the south gate of the Joint Force Headquarters-Colorado complex located at 6848 S. Revere Pkwy., Centennial, Colo., 80112 no later than 9:30 a.m. June 9.
