CENTENNIAL, Colo. (4/1/11) - The 140th Wing, Colorado Air National Guard, will celebrate the opening of new crew quarters on Buckley Air Force Base.

The ribbon on building 911 will be cut Saturday, April 2 at 10 a.m.

The new squadron alert crew quarters will provide billeting for pilots and crew of the 120th Fighter Squadron, who are charged with carrying out the 24/7 Air Sovereignty Alert mission. Until now, the Airmen were housed in temporary quarters built after the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Buckley Air Force Base is the only central alert location supporting Operation Noble Eagle, the military’s response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

“Our pilots and crews perform a vital mission: protecting our nation from aerial threats,” said Brig. Gen. Trulan A. Eyre, 140th Wing commander. “With these new quarters, we’ll take care of them while they take care of us.”

The 120th carries out one of the 18 ASA missions across the nation, and is charged with defending the Front Range masterfully and lethally, if required, in defense of the country.

As part of the celebration, a practice alert scramble will be generated in order to demonstrate the speed and professionalism with which Colorado Airmen react to threats in U.S. skies.

This military construction project was requested by the Colorado Congressional Delegation in 2009. The new $4 million dollar facility took more than a year to complete, employed more than 300 people and utilized more than 40 sub-contractors.

Note to editors: Media interested in attending must confirm with Capt. Agresti at the number listed above. In order to enter Buckley Air Force Base, media must enter at the Mississippi Avenue gate (just east of the Tower Road and Mississippi Avenue intersection) NO LATER THAN 9 a.m. and go through the commercial vehicle inspection area.  Media representatives will be required to provide their drivers’ licenses, vehicle registration and proof of insurance. Media will be escorted to the event.
