CENTENNIAL, Colo. (1/31/11) - The Colorado National Guard, dignitaries and Soldiers' families will celebrate the return of the 193rd Military Police Battalion from Afghanistan during a ceremony to be held at the Buckley Air Force Base Fitness Center on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 4 p.m.

Gov. John Hickenlooper is scheduled to speak.

The Colorado Army National Guard Soldiers are returning from a year-long deployment in Afghanistan, where they operated a brand-new detention facility at Bagram Air Base.

Their mission entailed providing command and control for detainee custody, control and care; along with the sustainment of the facility, the unit and the detainees.  A key accomplishment for the unit was the job training they provided to the Afghanistan National Army Military Police in order to prepare them for their eventual takeover of operations at the facility. The Soldiers also facilitated family visitations and provided educational opportunities for the detainees.

"I look forward to welcoming the Soldiers home and seeing them reunited with their families," said Brig. Gen. Dana M. Capozzella, commander of the Colorado Army National Guard.  "They are coming home with their heads held high after conducting a mission that had such a direct impact on operations in Afghanistan."

The Citizen-Soldiers of the 193rd come from communities all over Colorado.

Many members who volunteered for this deployment previously served in the Gulf War and, more recently, in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Michael Odgers at (720) 785-3860.  In order to enter Buckley Air Force Base, media must enter at the Mississippi Avenue gate (just east of the Tower Road and Mississippi Avenue intersection) NO LATER THAN 3:15 p.m. and go through the commercial vehicle inspection area.  Media representatives will be required to provide their drivers' licenses, vehicle registration and proof of insurance.
