Active Army, Army National Guard space teams return from Afghanistan

Army Space Support Team 20,  ARSST 6 home from year-long deployment

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (12/2/10) – The U.S. Army’s 1st Space Brigade will hold a welcome home ceremony for ARSST 6, 1st Space Support Battalion, and ARRST 20,117th Space Support Battalion, Colorado Army National Guard on Friday, Dec. 3, at 1:30 p.m.

The ceremony will take place at the United States Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Strategic Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.

Both of these six-man units served in Afghanistan. ARRST 20 supported Regional Command-Southwest, and ARRST 6 supported RC South. 

The spaced-base products that an ARSST can provide are used in virtually every aspect of theater operations.     Soldiers monitor and provide accurate, timely, and actionable terrestrial and space weather data; satellite imagery for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance; early warning, identification and reporting of theater missile threats; GPS monitoring and accuracy reporting; monitoring and reporting of counter-improvised explosive device programs; as well as providing situational awareness of the battlefield.

The 117th Space Support Battalion is the only Army National Guard Space Battalion, and part of the Army’s only Space Brigade. The 1st Space Brigade is a multi-component unit, Active, Reserve and National Guard Soldiers work, train and sometimes deploy together to provided space-based products.
