CENTENNIAL, Colo. (8/26/10) – A welcome home ceremony will be held for Commercial Imagery Team 4, 117th Space Battalion, Colorado Army National Guard Aug. 27 at 1:30 p.m. at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs.

The small unit is returning home after a nine month deployment to Bahrain.

This small unit was responsible for providing commercial satellite imagery to support joint, coalition, Department of Defense and Department of State operations across U.S. Central Command. While based in Bahrain, CIT 4 sent several teams to Qatar, Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq. The Soldiers’ spaced-based products supported Operation Moshtrarak, parliamentary elections in Iraq, flooding relief efforts in Pakistan and even anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden and the Horn of Africa.

Unlike their counterparts, Army Space Support Teams, CITs work with unclassified imagery that can be provided to foreign agencies for both commercial and military applications. Some commercial applications can include satellite imagery to monitor crops, mapping, satellite navigation and weather monitoring.

The training this team provided allowed both Iraqi and Afghan forces to obtain and utilize their own satellite imagery to plan and execute their own operations.

A commercial imagery team is comprised of eight personnel, both enlisted and officers. CITs provide unclassified, commercially-obtained, space-enabling products to coalition forces and other government agencies to monitor and provide accurate and timely satellite imagery for intelligence, and operational situational awareness.

Colorado’s 117th Space Support Battalion is the only National Guard space battalion and is part of the 1st Space Brigade, the Army’s only space brigade.

For Assignment Editors: Media interested in attending this event must confirm with Capt. Michael Odgers (720) 785-3860 in order to gain access to Peterson Air Force Base. Media must meet at the west gate Visitors Center. From Powers Boulevard, head east on Airport Road, then east on Stewart Avenue. Please meet no later than 12:45 p.m.
