2nd Colorado Cavalry helps solidify Western Front

Col. James Ford

On Oct. 25, 1864, the 2nd Colorado Cavalry fought under the Missouri flag, and in three days, helped conquer Gen. Sterling Price’s Kansans near Mine Creek, Mo.

This action and Price’s surrender solidified the Western front of the Civil War for the Union.

Capt. George West, a future adjutant general of the Colorado National Guard, succeeded in capturing a Rebel unit’s battle flag during this fighting – the only Confederate colors captured by Colorado forces during the conflict.
