Volunteers raise flag at Manila
By Army National Guard Maj. Adam Morgan, Colorado National Guard Historian
Manila

On August 13, 1898, the First Colorado Volunteers led the charge into the city of Manila, Philippines, and overtook it.

They also raised the first American flag to be flown over the city.

The Soldiers acted with such passion and fortitude that their division commander described them in a report as being “eager for duty,” which is why one of Colorado National Guard’s largest units, the 3rd Battalion, 157th Field Artillery, still boasts that motto.
