On July 31, 1976, a violent rainstorm erupted in Estes Park, near the head of the Big Thompson Canyon.

The storm sent a rampaging wall of water through Big Thompson Canyon, causing severe flooding, killing 144 people and endangering the lives and property of hundreds of residents and visitors celebrating Colorado’s centennial.

Several Colorado National Guard Units were called to perform search and rescue operations, and later, relief operations.
