Colorado Territory forms

Colorado Territory

Map of Colorado Territory 1861-1865 (Map provided by Columbine Genealogical and Historical Society/Used with permission)

On Feb. 28, 1861, Congress officially announced Colorado as a territory of the U.S.

This took place at a time when states within the Union were seceding, leading up to the Civil War.

Whether or not the intent of Congress was to help secure the Rocky Mountain minerals for the Union, it did help to do so. The Territory of Colorado would eventually produced a militia that traveled south and stopped a determined effort on the part of the Confederates to take control of the Rockies.
