U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) was established Oct. 1, 2002 to provide command and control of Department of Defense (DoD) homeland defense efforts and to coordinate defense support of civil authorities. USNORTHCOM defends America's homeland — protecting our people, national power, and freedom of action.
USNORTHCOM’s specific mission:
The COARNG Mobilization Element (USNORTHCOM), which was established in 2004, integrates qualified and trained Army National Guard personnel into designated staff positions of USNORTHCOM for the purpose of supporting the Commander in conducting operations to deter, prevent, and defeat threats and aggression aimed at the United States, and providing military assistance to civil authorities to include consequence management operations as directed.
