New license plate to be issued to World War II veterans
By Frank Tobani, Colorado Division of Veterans Affairs
World War II veteran plate
The Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles will begin issuing World War II license plates starting Jan. 3, 2012.

BROOMFIELD, Colo. (11/30/11) – Effective Jan. 3, 2012, the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles will begin issuing World War II license plates to any World War II veteran.

Plates will be issued for passenger vehicles, trucks that don’t exceed 16,000 pounds empty weight, noncommercial or recreational vehicles, motor homes and motorcycles.

The first set of plates is exempt from the one-time issuance fee of $25.00.

The veteran must be in possession of a DD-214 or equivalent document that proves that he or she served in the military between Sept. 16, 1940-July 25, 1947.

The creation of the World War II license plate came about because of a single phone call from a World War II veteran who asked why license plates for other classes of veterans were readily available, but there were none for his generation – who fought for, and won, wars in Europe and Asia.

In response, Colorado State Senator Rollie Heath proposed Senate Bill 11-037, which was quickly passed, effectively creating this long-overdue license plate that prominently displays the World War II Victory Medal and the title “World War II Veteran” on a blue and white background.

According to information received from the Department of Motor Vehicles, these plates may be ordered at the local Department of Motor Vehicle Office. Applicants will need to complete a DR 2432, which is currently being modified to include World War II veterans’ plates, and will be available by Jan. 3, 2012.

Instructions are on the application and can be mailed to the address listed below:
