DENVER (10/16/11) – Army Col. Christopher Petty, former commander of the Colorado Army National Guard’s 89th Troop Command, relinquished his position as brigade commander to Army Col. John Skillicorn, formerly the special projects officer of the 89th TC, at the Denver Armory.
“I am very excited,” said Skillicorn.“I really look forward to this opportunity, having been in the position as the executive officer of this brigade for the past two-plus years. This is really an opportunity to carry on some stability, and enhance the excellence of the organization.”
Col. Skillicorn doesn’t plan on making any immediate changes, but says he is ready to face future challenges.
“Every command is different,” said Skillicorn. “Based on the fact that Col. Petty and I have been working together for two years, I wouldn’t anticipate any significant changes at the beginning; but certainly as new challenges develop, we will change to meet those challenges.”
Petty is moving on to his new position as the chief of staff for the Colorado Army National Guard, and the full-time chief administrative officer at the Joint Forces Headquarters of the Colorado National Guard.
“It’s always tough leaving a command because it’s such a sacred honor leading troops in this kind of capacity,” said Petty, “but, you know, it’s been two years. It’s time to let another officer have a turn at it, and I’m excited about my new job.”
Skillicorn is grateful for the mentorship Petty has provided him.
“I appreciate Col. Petty’s teaching, coaching, and mentorship,” said Skillicorn. “He really has helped enhance my career, and really provided a template to become a brigade commander. And I am very excited to get to continue to serve with the Soldiers of the 89th Troop Command.”
The 89th TC is the brigade with the most deployed units in the COARNG.
