Handle with care: Volunteers assemble packages for troops
By Spc. Joseph K VonNida, Colorado National Guard Public Affairs

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (12/3/10) – In one massive team effort Dec. 3 at the Colorado National Guard state headquarters, the CONG Family Programs Office joined with dozens of volunteers to assemble holiday packages for deployed servicemembers.

Volunteers for the event included members of the Patriot Guard Riders, American Red Cross, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, Hearts Across the Miles, Mile High Honda, the Colorado National Guard and many other organizations. Items in the packages include snacks, sweets, toiletry items, clothing and letters from children.

“Our intent is to send to care packages to each of our (CONG) deployed Soldiers (and Airmen),” said Charlene Shields, CONG state family programs director.

Additional service members from other service branches will be receiving packages, as well.

Shields stated that most of the resources and volunteers were in place to pull this event off.  All they were lacking were the funds to make it happen. The Family Programs office had to rely on donations to cover postage for shipping the packages, most of it came in the form of a check for $5,000 from Mile High Honda.
