On Order, the 117th Space Battalion plans, coordinates, integrates, synchronizes and executes space and technical operations in support of Army, Joint, Combined Forces and Civil Authorities.

USASMDC/ARSTRAT conducts space and missile defense operations and provides planning, integration, control and coordination of Army forces and capabilities in support of U.S. Strategic Command missions. It serves as the Army force modernization proponent for space, high altitude and global missile defense; serves as the Army operational integrator for global missile defense; and conducts mission-related research and development in support of Army Title 10 responsibilities.

Army space support teams (ARSSTs) rapidly deploy globally, providing warfighters the ability to fully leverage space capabilities by providing space products and expertise to field units, enhancing their intelligence and operation planning capabilities. Each ARSST is composed of a six-Soldier space force enhancement (SFE) analysis team of two officers and four enlisted Soldiers, each having a unique space-related skill

U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command (USASMDC/ARSTRAT) deploys ARSSTs from within the 1st Space Brigade, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. ARSSTs provide situational awareness of space capabilities, assets, products and their impact on operations. Teams integrate within divisions, corps, joint task force (JTF), Marine Expeditionary Force, theater sustainment commands, and ASCC Headquarters.

This battalion has three companies under it:
 - 217th Space Support Co.
 - 1158th Space Support Co.
 - HHC, 117th Space Bn.
